With a market share of 18%, direct debit is one of the most popular payment methods, especially in German online shopping. It enables merchants to collect money easily and securely from their customers’ accounts. SEPA direct debit is even available throughout Europe. This requires the prior consent of the customer.

Direct debit is most frequently used for subscriptions and other recurring services. This is practical, of course, because customers do not have to enter their data again and again and initiate the payment process, but still retain full cost control at all times. Direct debit also makes one-off payments easier: after entering their data once, customers can conveniently pay for every subsequent purchase with a single click. Good for conversion, good for sales.
